SPI113 Intro to Interpreting

Based on the following situations, create a dialog in which an interpreter is needed.  You only have to pick one situation. Please print out two forms of the dialog, one version complete with the interpreter and another version with the interpreter’s sentences missing (similar to what I give you in class).
We will act out the dialogs in class. Your final grade will be the sum of the points for your written dialog and of your points for your ability to serve as an interpreter.

Scenario 1:  Special Education Teacher Statements and Questions

Scenario 2:  Social Development Assessment

If you have any questions about your final you can Facebook me, Tweet me, Google + me, email me, or text me and of course you can always reach me here.

16 julio 2012

Hola mis estudiantes!!

How did I miss a week? Man, does time fly by!!
Next week is pre-registration for NEW students, then the following week we'll be having our FINALS for the summer session... sort of sad, isn't it?

SPA282 Spanish Lab 4
Mexico part3 Destinos episodes 41-46
Estructura

  • Relative Pronouns
  • Review of Subjunctive
  • Introduce Imperfect Subjunctive
  • Conditional
  • If Clauses
  • Adverb Formation
Watch for a separate blog this week, (late this evening or tomorrow) just for grammar.

SPI113 Intro to Interpreting
We are slightly off schedule, but no worries. We've discussed the importance of having a trained interpreter. We also discussed the importance of having a "qualified" trained interpreter. In class we talked about the problems with hours, with funding, and with training.

Here is an article I'd like for you to read. Head's up, this made me sad... Your only assignment is to read the article and post your opinion in Moodle. I'd really liked to hear what you think about this situation.

Here are a few things from the article... honestly, how could this woman's case been denied?

1. The woman testified that her son went to political rallies and put up opposition posters, for example. The interpreter gave her answer in English: “Sometimes he come home with postage.”

2. The adjudicator admonished Ms. Neheid (the refugee) for being “evasive and at times incoherent” and expressed frustration with her perceived lack of co-operation.

3. The same interpreter had been ejected from another refugee hearing over complaints of incompetence, the Federal Court was told.

I especially enjoyed the examples of the interpretations at the end of the article. CLASSIC!

As always... if you need me, Email me, FB me, Tweet me, Text me... I'm here.

Ciao,
MLMoore
