SPI113 Intro to Interpreting
We are slightly off schedule, but no worries. We've discussed the importance of having a trained interpreter. We also discussed the importance of having a "qualified" trained interpreter. In class we talked about the problems with hours, with funding, and with training.

Here is an article I'd like for you to read. Head's up, this made me sad... Your only assignment is to read the article and post your opinion in Moodle. I'd really liked to hear what you think about this situation.

Here are a few things from the article... honestly, how could this woman's case been denied?

1. The woman testified that her son went to political rallies and put up opposition posters, for example. The interpreter gave her answer in English: “Sometimes he come home with postage.”

2. The adjudicator admonished Ms. Neheid (the refugee) for being “evasive and at times incoherent” and expressed frustration with her perceived lack of co-operation.

3. The same interpreter had been ejected from another refugee hearing over complaints of incompetence, the Federal Court was told.

I especially enjoyed the examples of the interpretations at the end of the article. CLASSIC!

As always... if you need me, Email me, FB me, Tweet me, Text me... I'm here.

Ciao,
MLMoore
