Spanish resource for students of Spanish at Sampson Community College. This site is designed to help with tricky grammar problems, vocabulary concerns, and to provide a schedule of assignments, assessments, and events in Sra Moore's classes.
Sorry this is a day late, but there's no excuse other than I'm beginning to experience the semester in full-swing! Getting caught up with grades, slowly beginning to understand the SAM system with CENGAGE, (big smile!!) and trying to learn PREZI so that I can spice up some grammar notes!
"You
fear me? So you should. All you who are vile. Would you like to know
how you will die? The sacred time is near. Beware the blackness of day.
Beware the man who brings the jaguar. Behold him reborn from mud and
earth. For the one he takes you to will cancel the sky, and scratch out
the earth. Scratch you out. And end your world. He's with us now. Day
will be like night. And the man jaguar will lead you to your end." 1.
In your opinion, how important are her words to the movie? Based on
your readings and what you know about the Mayans is this little girl
"possible" (meaning, did the Mayans believe in oracles, fortune tellers
...) or "Hollywood" (meaning, she was put in the movie to spice it up a
bit)? "And
a Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew
near to him and said, "We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for
whatever you wish and you shall have it." The Man said, "I want to have
good sight." The vulture replied, "You shall have mine." The Man said,
"I want to be strong." The jaguar said, "You shall be strong like me."
Then the Man said, "I long to know the secrets of the earth." The
serpent replied, "I will show them to you." And so it went with all the
animals. And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give, he
left. Then the owl said to the other animals, "Now the Man knows much,
he'll be able to do many things. Suddenly I am afraid." The deer said,
"The Man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop." But the owl
replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never
fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want. He will go on
taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I
have nothing left to give.'" 2. In your opinion, how does this story relate to your beliefs on "Why Latin America is poor?"
3. Would you recommend this movie to a friend? Why? Why not?

I know we haven't finished the movie yet, but I know the questions I'd like to ask you for your Movie Critique, so I figured I would send it you early.

We had this discussion in class last week and I said, I'd "blog" you the answer, so without overloading you with too much technical grammar, here it is.
Basically, ¿Qué? is what and ¿Cuál? is which, except when it is followed by the verb ser.
¿Qué? = what? when it asks for a definition or explanation.
¿Qué haces? ... What are you doing?
¿Qué piensas de ese libro? ... What do you think about that book?
¿Qué clase prefieres? ... What class do you prefer?
¿Qué? + ser = what? and asks for definition, identification, classification or an explanation.
¿Qué eres, hondureño o mexicano? ... What are you, Honduran or Mexican?
¿Qué es esto? ... What is this?
¿Cuál/Cuáles? = which one? and implies a choice
¿Cuál prefieres, el libro o la película? ... Which one do you prefer, the book or the movie?
¿Cuál de las pinturas te gusta más? ... Which of the paintings do you like more?
¿Cuál/Cuáles? + ser = what? but really is more of a which one? or which ones?
¿Cuál es tu clase favorita? ... What is your favorite class? (out of the ones you are taking)
¿Cuál es la capital de España? ... What is the capital of Spain? (selection from all of the cities)
I hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend. I am slightly ashamed to admit that I didn't do ANY of my work, I enjoyed my family and my time away. Now it's time to get some things done. :)
Before we can fully discuss why modern day Latin America is poor, we must first realize the riches of the Ancient Americas. The Ancient Americas were LOADED with Gold and Silver and other resources.
They didn't think the world was going to end in 2012
They had books!
They practiced human sacrifice
They saw their Gods in the sky
They traded extensively
They had Kings and Royal Families
Their Bible still exists
No one knows what happened to them (how did they collapse)
There are still Mayans alive today
A student suggested watching Apocalypto, a movie about the Mayan people. Really controversial, but may be something we should consider watching in class to discuss.
We discussed the life of Túpac Amaru II. AWESOME subject! Google him. I'm sure we will discuss him again this semester.
HUMAN SACRIFICES
As a class, we wanted to know how human sacrifices were chosen. According to the movies and to our readings, human sacrifices were an honor, but seriously who would really volunteer. I was pretty sure that many of the human sacrifices came from the captured warriors and slaves, but I wanted to verify. In one article I read, the author did say that "captive warriors, were the most common sacrifice." For the Aztecs, some sacrifices needed to be warriors, while others could be slaves, and they believed that tears of the new-born would ensure rain.
We learned that the Mayans also practiced some form of sacrifice. They had human sacrifices and animal sacrifices. Usually their human sacrifices came from prisoners or slaves. The Mayans also practiced "blood letting" which is self-cutting or piercings. The blood was wiped on a piece of paper and then burned, the smoke served as the passing of gifts or offerings to the Gods. For example, if a genital was pierced, the smoke would pay tribute to the fertility God.
As I read about the Incas I learned that they didn't sacrifice adults, but instead children. It was a great honor to be chosen as a sacrifice to the Incan Sun God. The children chosen had to be strong, healthy, beautiful, and pure. It seems that the children were drugged, whether with coca or with some sort of alcohol before they were killed. Maybe this was a way to lessen the actual pain, if not prevent pain all together, that they child would feel upon death.
Here is what is interesting in all of the articles that I read, the purpose of the sacrifice is a way to honor the Gods. The sacrifice served as a way to ask for rain, give thanks for food, give thanks for the sacrifices that the Gods themselves had made, and
I will upload these to Moodle. They are on my YouTube page and of course you have them here. I will share the other 2 videos as soon as I have them uploaded!
I hope things are starting to make sense and beginning to smooth out, but of course there are few small things I need to explain.
Mandatory Online Course Assessment:
Make sure you take this by WEDNESDAY, 28 Aug 13. If you do not take it
by the 28th, I HAVE to drop you from the class. No exceptions!

I decided to try something a little different this Module. Please let me know if this helps. I recorded your assignment, what I'd like for you to do for this Module. Besides the questions I'd like for you to answer, I also talked about grading and the due date. I have posted it in Moodle, too.
Hope it helps, if it does, you'll see me again next week to talk about Mexico! If it doesn't, I'll think of something else. No worries!!

For each Module I will post several Forum questions. EACH question is worth 25 points. You get 15 points for responding to the question and 5 points for each reply (up to 2 different people).
Example.
Have you ever been outside of the US?
BOB: Yes, I've been to Whatchamafazzy 3 times and Thingamajig twice.
(Bob gets 15 points for this answer)
JANE: Yes, I went to Whatchmacallit as a young child. (Jane gets 15 points)
BOB: Hey Jane, I've always wanted to go there. (Bob gets 5 points)
See what I mean?
I've put a 2 week deadline on the forums, to ease my grading. At the deadline, the forums will close.
We have a week left for Module 1. Expect to see Module 2's forum questions posted by the beginning of next week.
I hope this helps. I hate for you guys to be lost and I don't want any one to be stressed.
Relax and enjoy!
As always, if you feel a major or even a minor panic attack coming on, TEXT me, email me, Facebook me, Tweet me, or come by the office.

Last night we watched most of Hombres Armados. I hope you are enjoying this movie, it is one of my favorites. There are so many things we could talk about in this movie. So I decided to share a little bit of the main ideas to help you sort some of the information.
1. This movie takes place in a no name Latin American country, probably a Central American country. Why no name? Probably because the author/director feels that this story is an universal problem/situation through out Latin America. What do you think?
2. The medical students were part of the "Alliance for Progress" program, similar to our Teachings Fellows program, in which they received their medical degree (free of charge) provided they went and served as doctors in poor villages. President Kennedy proposed a 10yr, crazy amount of money program in which the US provided aid to Latin America. During WWII Latin American countries increased their production of raw materials and kept prices low, so that the US could do what was needed to win the war. After the war, US increased aid to Europe and Japan, Latin America felt slighted. To smooth the ridges, President Kennedy proposed the "Alliance for Progress" which provided the countries of Latin America money, expertise, and technology. Ideally, this "aid" would help strengthen the Latin American people so that they could fight against Communism (the real threat to the US). With what you know about Latin America and with what you are seeing in this movie, do you think the program worked?
Important Lines in the movie ... things to think about
1. The old blind woman said, "When an Indian puts on an uniform, he becomes white."
2. When the American couple are talking to Dr. Fuentes about the "atrocities" in the country, the ones they read about in NY, the Dr. tells them that doesn't happen in his country.
3. The guerrillas murdered Dr. DeSoto (one of his students) because he treated wounded soldiers.
4. “The rich use the army to push the Indians off the
good land so they’ll starve to death. So
the Indians go pick their coffee. And
they come back with their pitiful wages and those leeches suck them dry.”
5. Fuentes and the
ex-priest discuss their failures.
Fuentes: “We both ended up … a total
failure.”
Priest: “You can’t feel responsible for
those students.”
Fuentes: “I should have warned them.”
Priest: “If you didn’t know what the
danger was, how could you warn them?”
Fuentes: “I should have known.”
Priest: “Maybe.Maybe innocence is a sin.”
Hope this helps. Can't wait to finish the movie and discuss, discuss, DISCUSS!
