la semana de 9 septiembre 2013

¡Hola y'all!

Sorry this is a day late, but there's no excuse other than I'm beginning to experience the semester in full-swing! Getting caught up with grades, slowly beginning to understand the SAM system with CENGAGE, (big smile!!) and trying to learn PREZI so that I can spice up some grammar notes!

BIG NEWS! I created a Facebook page for the Community Spanish Interpreter Program at Sampson Community College. I'm very excited. If you get the chance, please check it out, even like it!

"You fear me? So you should. All you who are vile. Would you like to know how you will die? The sacred time is near. Beware the blackness of day. Beware the man who brings the jaguar. Behold him reborn from mud and earth. For the one he takes you to will cancel the sky, and scratch out the earth. Scratch you out. And end your world. He's with us now. Day will be like night. And the man jaguar will lead you to your end."

1. In your opinion, how important are her words to the movie? Based on your readings and what you know about the Mayans is this little girl "possible" (meaning, did the Mayans believe in oracles, fortune tellers ...) or "Hollywood" (meaning, she was put in the movie to spice it up a bit)?

"And a Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew near to him and said, "We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it." The Man said, "I want to have good sight." The vulture replied, "You shall have mine." The Man said, "I want to be strong." The jaguar said, "You shall be strong like me." Then the Man said, "I long to know the secrets of the earth." The serpent replied, "I will show them to you." And so it went with all the animals. And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give, he left. Then the owl said to the other animals, "Now the Man knows much, he'll be able to do many things. Suddenly I am afraid." The deer said, "The Man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop." But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want. He will go on taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I have nothing left to give.'"

2. In your opinion, how does this story relate to your beliefs on "Why Latin America is poor?"

3. Would you recommend this movie to a friend? Why? Why not?

SPA141 Culture and Civilization ... Apocalypto Movie Critique

Apocalypto Movie Critique

I know we haven't finished the movie yet, but I know the questions I'd like to ask you for your Movie Critique, so I figured I would send it you early.

I can't wait to read your critiques. Remember you do have the option of filming your critiques instead of writing them.

SPA120 Spanish for the Workplace ... ¿Qué? o ¿Cuál?

We had this discussion in class last week and I said, I'd "blog" you the answer, so without overloading you with too much technical grammar, here it is.

Basically, ¿Qué? is what and ¿Cuál? is which, except when it is followed by the verb ser.

¿Qué? = what? when it asks for a definition or explanation.

  • ¿Qué haces?  ...  What are you doing?
  • ¿Qué piensas de ese libro?  ...  What do you think about that book?
  • ¿Qué clase prefieres?  ...  What class do you prefer?
¿Qué? + ser = what? and asks for definition, identification, classification or an explanation.
  • ¿Qué eres, hondureño o mexicano?  ...  What are you, Honduran or Mexican?
  • ¿Qué es esto?  ...  What is this?
¿Cuál/Cuáles? = which one? and implies a choice
  • ¿Cuál prefieres, el libro o la película?  ...  Which one do you prefer, the book or the movie?
  • ¿Cuál de las pinturas te gusta más?  ...  Which of the paintings do you like more?

¿Cuál/Cuáles? + ser = what? but really is more of a which one? or which ones?
  • ¿Cuál es tu clase favorita?  ... What is your favorite class? (out of the ones you are taking)
  • ¿Cuál es la capital de España?  ...  What is the capital of Spain? (selection from all of the cities)

Hope this helps!
